Thanksgiving
Thanks for all the parents who were able to come to parent-teacher conferences. I enjoyed visiting with you about your second grader. Feel free to let me know of any concerns that arise in the future.
We just finished a Social Studies unit about the Native Americans. In our study we learned how resourceful and respectful they were, using the natural resources around them. We did a play using Pilgrim and Indian costumes to depict the role each played in the first Thanksgiving. Have a great Thanksgiving break with your families.

Butterfly Release
We had a big day on Friday. One of our activities was to release our butterflies into the garden at the front of the school. The kids enjoyed watching them be set free and saying good-bye. It was a bitter-sweet moment for some as they have gotten quite attached. We have done several different projects to help them learn about metamorphosis, but it was quite an experience seeing it first hand.
The kids also enjoyed pancakes to accompany the Pancake Jake long 'e' poem that we have been practicing.

The new school year is off to a great start! Our first science unit is about insects and our caterpillars will be arriving this week. We will observe and record all the changes that they will be
going through in the next few weeks. Ask your child how to tell if a bug is an insect. We have
learned three ways they are all alike.
We have also started our Silly Story theme in Reading. The kids are enjoying reading about Dragon and Julius. They also are enjoying the short vowel poems with the songs and actions that help them learn those sounds.
We are starting our Topic 2 math unit. This will be about strategies to help them learn their addition and subtraction facts.

Meet~Greet~Find your Seat!
I look forward to seeing my students and their parents at our annual Meet~Greet~Find Your Seat Night!
